Inaugral WA sale 2012
WA sale a great success
DATE: 8th Feb 2012
Lawsons Angus have just completed our first Western Australian Production Sale. The Sale was conducted by Elders Esperance and bulls were sold on property at “Woolahra”, 799 Springdale Rd, Jerdacuttup, which is approximately 135 km west of Esperance and 35km east of Hopetoun.
This was an exciting Sale for us as we offered an outstanding contemporary group of bulls to our WA clients. These bulls were July-August 2010 drop calves out of two year old heifers and have run together from birth. Over half of these (19 bulls) are below breed average for birth weight EBVs (<4.7 BW) and are suitable for joining heifers.
We believe that WA producers have great potential to capture the productivity gains available on-farm and on the rail from the superior genetics of Lawsons Angus. This inaugural sale was the starting point for that progress.
Our WA business is well led and managed by Tim Stokes and Andy Robertson who have been up for the challenge of building a new production system from scratch. Please contact Tim or myself anytime to inspect the bulls or our breeding program. We always enjoy our interaction with WA producers and the sharing of ideas and information is what all keeps us moving forward.

HISTORY was made at the inaugural Lawsons Angus bull sale last Friday when stud principal Harry Lawson hosted the very first bull sale conducted via video in WA.
The system was well received by the buyers, agents and on-lookers alike and could mark a permanent change in the way bull sales are conducted in WA.
Mr Lawson, along with Woolahra farm managers Tim Stokes and Andy Robertson, put together an impressive line-up of Lawsons Angus bulls which were on display in small groups on the day while the
video of each individual bull was played during the auction.
The quality offering had everyone talking and with only one of the 27 bulls passed in, buyers proved they weren’t mucking around when it came to getting their hands on these superior genetics.
At the end of the day the average had reached $4952 to top at a huge $9000.
Mr Lawson said he was very happy with how the sale went.
“It was obviously our first sale in WA and we didn’t really know what to expect,” he said.
“We had a big crowd with more than 30 registered buyers and the prices were comparable with other sales we have had around Australia.
“I think the response (to the video sale) was really good, the rainy day here made it more pertinent to have something inside and I can see that technology fitting in even more going down the track.”
It was Elders auctioneer Don Morgan’s first video bull sale and he also said it worked extremely well offering many benefits to the industry.
“The bulls sold extremely well and it was a very, very good sale,” Mr Morgan said.
“The video selling worked well and it is an excellent concept. The actual videos were also very good and
gave a good representation of the bulls and I can’t see any disadvantage in the system.”
The sale kicked off in a favourable fashion with the first bull of the day meeting strong competition from the crowd.
Elders auctioneer Don Morgan eventually knocked it down for $6750 to CC Wheatley, Toodyay.
The best was yet to come though with the bull in lot six proving to be a beauty.
Lawsons F0253, born on July 22, 2010, was a clear favourite among the crowd with EBVs recording a low birthweight of +3.7 with above average 400 and 600-day weights of +82 and +108 respectively, a
carcase weight of +64 and an EMA of +4.9.
The bull was sired by Ythanbrae Henry VIII and was secured by Tim Stokes on behalf of John Cleeland, King Isle Farms, Tasmania, for $9000.
Mr Cleeland said it was the sire’s genetics that he was chasing.
“I have previously bought females out of Ythanbrae Henry VIII and want to get more of his genetics to inject into my herd before he disappears,” he said.
Mr Cleeland also bought an additional bull earlier in the offering for $7000, which was the second top price of the day.
This bull, Lawsons F0247, was out of Lawsons Invincible C402 and stood out for its 400 and 600-day weight EBVs of +87 and +105, its EMA figure of +8.1 and an IMF of +2.8.
Willing to continually pay top dollar was Quintarra Farms, Esperance, which worked through the Lawsons catalogue to secure a team of three superior bulls for $6250, $6750 and $5250.
These well put together bulls all stood out for their 600-day weights and EMA figures.
NS & MW Lawrence, Esperance, were also big fans of the Lawsons offering taking home three for $5000, $5250 and $5250as were RRA & SL Cameron, Penhurst, Victoria, who bought three for $3000,$4000 and $3000.
Bundemar, Redmond, bought two for $3500 and $5000 and Elders Esperance also bought two for $2500 each.
Hellcrest Farm, Walpole, snapped up two bulls for $5500 and $5000, Granite Hill Pty Ltd, Esperance, took one for $6250 and I & C McCallum, Esperance, also secured one for $6000.
