History
A history of innovation
In 1970 the three Angus Studs of Glenaroua, Ythanbrae (now trading as Lawsons Angus) and Tarralea Park joined together to form the Performance Tested Angus Group – known commonly as Pert Angus.
The members were anxious to promote and standardise the use of performance records in the assessment of the genetic value of Angus Bulls.
The first sale of rising two-year-old bulls was held in 1971.
Other records were kept by each stud master which related to the Group’s aim of producing animals of the fastest growth rate, highest fertility, sound functional features and best carcase quality under commercial conditions. Lawsons Angus were a strong supporter of Breedplan since its introduction in 1985 and indeed since the performance records were evaluated back to the late 1960’s.
In 1994 Lawsons Angus entered a new growth phase and the breeding herd over the past decade has been expanded from 300 performance recorded females to 2,000 head. It was then 30 years Lawson family decided the only way for Objective (Performance) Breeding would succeed was to take the concept into the market place.
By this time the objectives had been achieved and it was then difficult to sell a bull that wasn’t backed by sound scientific breeding, i.e. Estimated Breeding Values. Performance Recording was no longer regarded as being radical and the adoption of technology had enabled annual bull sales to expand from 30 to 250 head.
Lawsons Angus remains a very dynamic and creative enterprise, despite the drought and commodity prices. We see no future for the Beef Industry unless we develop a Branded Quality Food product. To this end we have been strong supporters of both the AMG Gold brand the CAABTM brand along with a strong emphasis on improving the marbling potential for commercial clients producing feeder steers for the Japanese market. The success rate being achieved is very encouraging and vindicates our decision over 10 years ago to strongly focus on meat quality in our program.
In 1999 Lawsons embarked on their first ‘on property’ Sale at Yea where 97 bulls sold for a record Angus average of $5,021. This sale also launched the Gardiner Angus Ranch (GAR), Kansas USA partnership with the sale growing to 300 bulls and 300 females sold in the annual March Sale. Lawsons Angus are the largest seedstock operation in Australia selling over 800 bulls annually with auction and private treaty sales. What makes Lawsons Angus unique is the disciplineed PLANNED BREEDING PROGRAM with 100% AI and embryo transfer (ET) using the best proven bulls in the world. Over 1,000 embryos from elite performance dams are implanted per annum.
The partnership with GAR combines two of the largest progressive seedstock herds in the world and provides a unique platform for commercial breeders to exploit these global genetic and information networks.
In 1996 Lawsons Angus developed a Queensland division, which is being run by Nic and Amy Paul in conjunction with the Sullivan family, Kyntee Pastoral Company at Toobeah, Goondiwindi. LA Queensland is now providing leading edge Angus and Senegus genetics to northern herds under the same disciplined program that LA has been built on.
Queensland commercial herds can now access large numbers of bulls by the best proven Angus and Senegus bulls in the breed that are adapted to northern pastures, environment and grazing systems. The Queensland herd will be expanded to over 800 registered and performance recorded Angus and Senegus breeding females.
The vision of Lawsons Angus is to establish the business as the leading national supplier of superior Angus genetics. This goal will be further enhanced with the development of a division in Western Australia, which is currently in progress.
